Well, it's been almost a solid month that we have "lived" in this new place, new house, new life!
We were only here for 3 of those 4 weeks, and we're still knee deep in boxes, and I still don't have a lot of the little things I need to "settle in" but all in due time!
We have certainly made our rounds through town, knowing at least most of the employees of the local shops by name and they certainly know our little guy...as he is practically a local celebrity. Today, upon entering our favorite townie eatery "Sonnie's", we were greeting by 5 smiling young ladies, all waving to Gabriel spouting "Gabriel! WE MISSED YOU!". It really makes things feel homey and comfortable, and they know my name now too after enough visits.
As I type this, the East coast is taking on what is supposed to be a very intense category 1 hurricane (when it gets here), being compared to the infamous hurricane Gloria of the 1980's, even though that one was a category 3 by the time it hit where we were living at the time (Long Island,NY). Apparently, the new moon creates a pull of the tide that increases the danger on the coast significantly, which increases other elements, etc....
Gabriel and I spent the past few days preparing in whatever ways we could, since Rob happens to have been working "through the weekend" in West Virginia through all of this...though, if he were scheduled to have been coming home, he may not have been able to because of all the closed airports, train stations,etc...
We put together a "Hurricane Box" and a "hurricane fun bag" for the boo, of books, toys and puzzles that might keep him happy during whatever "event" we have to endure.
There is a good chance that, given where we are and the density of the tree population, we will loose power if there is a serious wind scenario...and if that happens, we will have no water...because the pump for the well is electric! YAY TECHNOLOGY! <sigh>
So, we've filled the bath tub and a few buckets for emergency toilet flushing and hand washing, tarped up the chairs on the porch, brought in the plants and went down the list of basic prep before a hurricane...at least whatever a 7 month pregnant mom with a preschooler can manage.
We also made a project of gathering as much fruit as possible from our mini-orchard so as to save whatever might get thrown from the trees in the storm, even if they have to "ripen in the bowl" later. Peaches and apples...enough to make 2 pies at least!
We shall see how this goes.
